We begin with the 1962 Heidegger essay, "Time and Being" wondering the whither and which of time. This means we are thinking about time in regard to place. What is the spatiality of temporality. Present time is not the same as the presence of space. Being with folks and things has with post presence of time and presence of space. "Presence means: the constant abiding that approaches man, reaches him, and is extended to him" (Casey quoting Heidegger, TB). Caveat emptor: headiness ahead.

Heidegger stresses that the three notions of time as past, present, and future are less crucial to the understanding of time than their mutual interplay (zuspiel). This interplay is the "reign" of time. It is the existence of time as it stands out. As Casey claims, it is the way that time "effloresces" (p. 277). Time pivots in its presence through existence it also has instance. Existance and instance pivot in presence. Right here and right now Casey deploys a term that fits exactly with my thinking in terms of founding, giving, and pouring tools into their being. "The action of 'nearing nearness' (nahernde Nahe) anneals time" (p. 277). To anneal is to heat and cool in order to make strong. Consider the the blacksmith annealling the hammer. Nearness now instantiates a "realm" (Bereich) of interplay. It consists as an Ortschaft. An Ortschaft conveys the sense of gathering toward a vanguard of presence. It connotes the blade of a spear. It is the cutting edge instant and moment of space and time. "Nearness is a placial mode of presencing that gathers time together in its threefoldness" (Casey, pp. 277-278). As such, along with the execution in any relation to tool-being, that is, withdrawal, place takes its stand (exists) in the background social practices and habits of human beings who have being-in-the-world as their primordial habit.

The very same background rhythm of existentiality and temporality syncopates in the emergent event (ereignis). But the emergent event as the instance of the sending of being and the constant flow of time even is withdrawn from itself. The emergence of the event as appropriation is the structure that in its very execution grants spatial clearance for people, places, and things. The withdrawal of appropriation makes space by taking place.
